Race EIGHT, The Excelsior
This race is insanely competitive, and every horse in the gate has a realistic chance to win this tough, 10-furlong test. Best long shots to watch are in red:
1) Micromanage 7/1. Best speed at this distance
2) Effinex 7/1 Did not fare well in his only 10-furlong race, and will be climbing in class. He is trained by Jimmy Jerkens, though, who is undervalued, at least for now.
3) Stormin Monarcho 7/1. An easy win last time may have left him in good shape for a late drive. ML is 15/1.
4) North Slope 10/1. He has a turf victory at the distance. The ML of 5/1 is much much too low.
5) Cousin Stephen 8/1. He will try to lead 'em around but has had no try at this distance.
6) Red Rifle 11/1. Winner of a G-2 at the distance, and has won longer races on the turf.
7) Wicked Strong 7/2. Also Jimmy Jerkens trained, and obviously the monster horse based on the Travers and Jim Dandy. But those were 8 months ago, and the crowd is going to bet this horse down to insane levels. ML says 1/1. Sure, he's the most likely winner, but guaranteed to be a bad bet.
8) Turco Bravo 15/1. The least likely winner, but not impossible. If he drifts back to 20/1 or so, he's a good bet. Has won at this distance in Chile. Does he have the class to win here? Maybe. But he does have the lungs and the legs.
