HAWTHORNE OCT. 27

Race 5,6,8 offer the best opportunities for longshot bettors.

$10 bet for a 9.30 return.

 HAW 1 (chalky)

Only 6 horses in an not a lot of competition for...
1-(C) 3/1 1.60
*2-(A) 3/2 Win 2.70
... For whatever reason, the crowd focused on the wrong one.

HAW 2 - No thanks

HAW 3 - (chalky)

Another short field without a lot of longshot potential.
*3-(A) 1/1 Win 1.60
5-(B) 7/5 Show 1.80
... Once again, we found a bit of chalky value.

HAW 4 (normal)

$1 pick 3 seems to be the only available horizontal.  A few simple ideas:
(A) 1x2x2 =$4
(B)  1x3x3 =$6
(C) 4x5x6 $24 Paid $30 for $24, so no big deal.
A few longshots with a chance in this race...
3-(C) 5/1 Awful first try at Hawthorne, maybe learned something.
5-(A) 2/1 Trainer Clay Brinson winning over 40%. Win. 50
6-(C) 5/1 A threat if he recovers prior form.
7-(C) 5/1 Recent wins in turf and slop.
... With the crowd going nuts on the #5, we backed off.

HAW 5 (normal)

Two (A) horses.
1-(C) 8/1 2.20, a ridiculous price. Finished 8 lengths out.
*2-(A) 7/2 3.60 Show.
4-(A) 7-2 Win 1.40
6-(B) 9/2
*7-(C) 8/1 11.90
... The underlay won and our two overlays lost.

HAW 6 The Bucks Boy handicap (longshot)

*3-(A) 4/1 10.90 Will win on the front end or not at all, and will have early competition from #2 and #6.
4-(C) 6/1 3.20
5-(A)  1.60 4/1 morning line 5/2, lollygags until deep stretch, gains 5+ lengths late.
6-(B) 9/2  3.20 Can win from anywhere, line seems about right.
7-(C) 8/1 Win 2.80
*8-(C) 8/1 Show 10.60
... Yup, another bad favorite, but we still couldn't cash.

HAW 7  - Pass.

This pass breaks up a lot of potential pick-type wagers.

HAW 8 (longshot)

2-(B) 5/1 2.00
*3-(B) 5/1 25.70
4-(A) 4/1 Win 3.00
*5-(C) 7/1 8.30
10-(C) 7/1 Place 2.80
... Again, bad favorite identified, but no luck on #3 and #5, our wild longshots.

HAW 9 (chalky)

It's possible the crowd will offer chalky bargains on one or both of these...
*4-(A) 4/5 1.80
*10-(B) 3/2 2.00
.... They offered a bargain on both, and a dutch on 'em paid a 50% profit.
