AP NINE BEVERLY-D
Nine horses in the gate, and five contenders. They are, in order:
6-7-2-4-1
1: La Tia 47 ... Just maybe and 20/1 is generous.
2: Duntle 49 ... 5-for-9 in Europe.
3: Solid Appeal 46 ... Canadian G2s may be weak.
4: Dank 49 ... Tough in last Euro three.
5: Gifted Girl 47 ... Not the most gifted of the Euros here.
6: Marketing Mix 51 ... Price, not talent, is the question.
7: Starformer 49 ... Toss Belmont clunker to see a contender.
8: Artemus Kitten 42 ... Ken's pet project.
9: Ausus 45 ... Probably 17/1 true odds.
AP TEN: THE MILLIONS
Any horse with a score of 47 or more could easily show up here. Only the 2-4-5-12 are overmatched. Everybody else belongs. That leaves us with a 9-horse race.
Strongest are the 11-1-13.
But in a crowded field of very tough horses, the handicapper might well construct several clever exotics with longer-priced horses. This is a roll of the dice, and 8-1 would be good target odds.
1: Real Solution 49 ... Real close at Belmont
2: Finnegans Wake 44 ... No chance of coming back from the dead.
3: Hunter's Light 47 ... It's just possible.
4: Nate's Mineshaft 43 ... Gutsy but overmatched.
5: Temeraine 44 .. No chance.
6: Side Glance 48 ... Nice Brit wins.
7: Indy Point 48 ... But certainly not at 9/2
8: Mull of Killough 48 ... Will need luck of the Irish.
9: Guest of Honour 48 ... Must learn to spell first.
10: The Apache 50 ... Made big money at Meydan
11: Little Mike 51 ... Richest horse here.
12: Rahystrada 46 ... Admirable old fella, but not in it.
13: Grandeur 49 ... Back in U.S. after York just-miss.
