THE FIGS LIE, CHAPTER 2,654

The top fig contenders:
Eye Candy Sandi had won at Beyer 69, SA maiden claimer. 7/1 on the live tote.
Go West Madam had been nosed out at Beyer 65, Haw Level One Allowance. 1/1 on the tote.

Go West Madam won by 5 lengths, Eye Cand1 Sandy quit after four furlongs.

The public was not fooled. Go West had proven herself at a higher level. But the Beyers were fooled, giving Sandi a 4-point edge.

It happens over and over. The Beyers are poor at accounting for class, and worse at accounting for pace.

Go West's last pace was 21+3, 45+2
Sandi's were 22+2, 46.

So Sandi was three or four lengths slower to the top of the stretch.

The actual race was run in 22 and 45. It's no surprise that Sandi quit after the half, and came in 6th of 7 starters.

(First race, Santa Anita, Feb 3, 2007 , 6.5 furlong, A40s)
